Fasting on Ashura — Complete Guide | 10th Muharram 1447 🌙

Fasting on Ashura

يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاء

One day of fasting — one year of sins forgiven 🤍

10th Muharram | Ashura 1447 | Fasting | Forgiveness

Assalam o Alaikum, dear brothers and sisters! 🌙

Have you ever wished you could press a reset button on the past year? Erase the mistakes. Wipe away the sins. Start completely fresh — with a clean heart and a clean record?

Allah — in His infinite mercy — has given us exactly that. One day. One fast. One year of sins forgiven.

That day is Yawm ul Ashura — the 10th of Muharram. And it is approaching.

This is not a small matter. This is not just another fast. This is one of the greatest gifts Allah has placed in the Islamic calendar — a day so sacred that the Prophet ﷺ himself fasted it eagerly and urged us to do the same.

Today — let us understand exactly what Ashura is, why it matters, and how to make the most of this precious day. 🤍

🌙 What is Yawm ul Ashura?

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram — the first and most sacred month of the Islamic calendar. The word Ashura itself comes from Asharah — meaning ten.

This is the day Allah saved Prophet Musa ﷺ and Bani Israel from the tyranny of Pharaoh. The sea split. The oppressors drowned. The believers were freed. It was a day of divine rescue — a day Allah showed the world that truth always defeats falsehood.

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah and found the Jews fasting on this day, he asked why. They said: "It is the day Allah saved Musa ﷺ from Pharaoh." The Prophet ﷺ said: "We have more right to Musa than you." And he fasted — and commanded the Muslims to fast. 🤍

☪ Hadith 1 — One Year of Sins Forgiven

صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللَّهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ

English Translation

"Fasting on the Day of Ashura — I hope from Allah that it expiates the sins of the year before it."
— Sahih Muslim | Hadith 1162

Read these words slowly. The Prophet ﷺ said he hopes from Allah — and when the Prophet ﷺ hoped something from Allah — it was not wishful thinking. It was near-certainty based on divine promise.

One day of fasting — and an entire year of sins wiped away. The sins of 365 days. All the small mistakes, the hasty words, the missed opportunities to do good — gone. Because of one fast.

Think about what you did this past year that you are not proud of. The sins you wish you could take back. The moments you wish you had been better. This is Allah giving you the chance to erase all of it — with one day.

Do not miss this day. Do not let it pass like any other day. This is too big a gift to ignore. 🤍

☪ Hadith 2 — The Story Behind Ashura

"When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah he found the Jews fasting on the Day of Ashura. He asked: 'What is this day you are fasting?' They said: 'This is a great day — it is the day Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh. So Musa fasted it in gratitude and we fast it too.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'We have more right to Musa than you.' So he fasted that day and ordered the Muslims to fast it."
— Sahih Al-Bukhari | Hadith 2004

SubhanAllah. The fast of Ashura has roots going back thousands of years — to the day the sea split for Prophet Musa ﷺ. To the day Allah showed the world that no Pharaoh — no matter how powerful — can stand against the will of Allah.

Musa ﷺ fasted this day out of pure gratitude. Not because he had to. But because when Allah does something so magnificent — the only response is shukr. The only response is worship.

When we fast Ashura — we are connecting ourselves to that same tradition. We are saying: "O Allah — just as You saved Musa — we trust You to save us. Just as You destroyed Pharaoh — we trust You to defeat every difficulty in our lives."

This fast is an act of gratitude, of hope, and of connection to the greatest moments in Islamic history. 🤍

📋 How to Fast Ashura — Complete Guide

📅 Which Days to Fast?

1
Best Option — Fast 9th AND 10th Muharram

The Prophet ﷺ said: "If I live until next year I will fast the 9th too." Fasting both days is the most complete Sunnah and distinguishes us from other faiths. This is the most recommended option. ✅

2
Good Option — Fast 10th AND 11th Muharram

Some scholars say fasting the day after is also acceptable as a way of distinguishing from others. This option also carries great reward. ✅

3
Minimum — Fast 10th Muharram Only

If you cannot fast both days — fasting the 10th alone is still confirmed in Hadith and carries the great reward of one year of sins forgiven. ✅

🤲 How to Make Niyyah (Intention)

The niyyah for Ashura fast is in the heart — you do not need to say it aloud. Simply intend before Fajr:

نَوَيْتُ صَوْمَ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى

"I intend to fast the Day of Ashura for the sake of Allah the Most High."

📌 Important Rules of the Ashura Fast

Begin the fast at Fajr time — no eating or drinking from Fajr until Maghrib
Have Suhoor before Fajr — it is Sunnah and gives you energy
Break fast at Maghrib — preferably with dates and water like the Prophet ﷺ
Avoid all things that break the fast — food, drink, smoking, and marital relations during fast hours
Guard your tongue — no lying, backbiting, or arguing during the fast
Make lots of dua, istighfar, and dhikr throughout the day
Give sadaqah on this day — it is a blessed day for good deeds
📖 Quranic Verse — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183

"O you who believe — fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you — so that you may attain Taqwa."

This verse reveals something beautiful — fasting is not new to Islam. It was given to every nation before us. Prophet Musa ﷺ fasted. Prophet Isa ﷺ fasted. Every prophet who came — fasting was part of their worship.

And the purpose of fasting is always the same: Taqwa — God-consciousness. The awareness that Allah is always watching. The awareness that every moment matters. Fasting trains the soul to control its desires — and a soul that can control its desires can conquer the world.

Lesson: When you fast Ashura — you are joining a tradition that stretches back to the beginning of humanity. You are walking in the footsteps of every prophet. That is not a small thing. 🤍

"Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. Upon Him I rely and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."
— Surah At-Tawbah 9:129 — Say 7 times morning and evening
