A New Year — A New Beginning — A New You 🤍

Muharram 1447 | Islamic New Year | Ashura | Hijri Calendar

Assalam o Alaikum, dear brothers and sisters! 🌙

A new year has begun. Not the one celebrated with fireworks and parties. But a deeper, quieter, more sacred new year — the Islamic New Year. The beginning of Muharram 1447.

The world marks its new year with noise and celebration. But the Islamic new year invites us to something different — to reflection, to renewal, to return.

A new Hijri year means a new page. Whatever happened last year — the mistakes, the missed prayers, the broken promises to yourself and to Allah — a new page has been turned. And on this blank page, you get to write something beautiful.

The question is — what will you write? 🤍

🌙 What is Muharram?

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. Its name literally means "forbidden" or "sacred" — because Allah Himself declared it one of the four sacred months in which fighting was prohibited and worship was especially honored.

The Hijri calendar began with the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet ﷺ from Makkah to Madinah — one of the most significant events in Islamic history. That migration was not just a physical journey — it was a journey of faith, sacrifice, and complete trust in Allah.

Every year when Muharram arrives — we are reminded of that same spirit. The spirit of leaving behind what is harmful and moving toward what is right. The spirit of hijrah of the heart. 🤍

📖 Quranic Verse 1 — Surah At-Tawbah 9:36

English Translation

"Indeed the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth — of these, four are sacred."

📝 Tafseer — The Sacred Months

This verse reveals that Allah designed twelve months into the fabric of creation itself — and from the very beginning, He chose four of them to be sacred. These four months are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul Qadah, and Dhul Hijjah.

Muharram stands first among them — literally and symbolically. It is the gateway of the Islamic year. And just as the first pages of a book set the tone for everything that follows — how you spend Muharram sets the spiritual tone for your entire year.

The scholars say that sins committed in sacred months are more serious — and good deeds performed in them carry extra weight. This is a month where every act of worship is amplified.

Lesson: Do not enter this sacred month without intention. Decide today — what kind of year do you want to have? Start it right. Start it with Allah. 🌙

📖 Quranic Verse 2 — Surah Al-Hashr 59:18

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَلْتَنظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ

English Translation

"O you who believe — fear Allah. And let every soul look at what it has sent forth for tomorrow."

📝 Tafseer — Look at What You Are Sending Ahead

At the beginning of a new year — this verse hits differently. Allah is asking every single one of us to pause and reflect: "What have you sent ahead for tomorrow?"

The "tomorrow" here refers to the Day of Judgement. What deeds have you sent ahead? What is waiting for you on the other side? What will your record look like?

This is not meant to make us feel guilty. It is meant to wake us up. To remind us that time is passing. That each year that goes by is a year we cannot get back. That the deeds we do today are the provisions we send ahead for the most important journey of our lives.

Lesson: As this new Islamic year begins — look at what you are sending ahead. And if you do not like what you see — change it. Now. Today. This very moment. 🤍

☪ Hadith 1 — Best Fasting After Ramadan

أَفْضَلُ الصِّيَامِ بَعْدَ رَمَضَانَ شَهْرُ اللَّهِ الْمُحَرَّمُ

"The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah — Muharram."
— Sahih Muslim | Hadith 1163

The Prophet ﷺ called Muharram "Shahrullah" — the Month of Allah. Out of all twelve months — this is the one Allah attributed to Himself. Just as the masjid is called "the House of Allah" to show its special status — Muharram is called "the Month of Allah" to show its extraordinary rank.

And in this sacred month — fasting carries a special reward. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged us to fast as much as possible in Muharram — especially on the Day of Ashura.

If you can fast even a few days this Muharram — do it. Allah Himself is watching. And He named this month after Himself for a reason. 🤍

☪ Hadith 2 — The Day of Ashura

"Fasting on the Day of Ashura — I hope that Allah will expiate the sins of the year before it."
— Sahih Muslim | Hadith 1162

The 10th of Muharram — Yawm ul Ashura — is one of the most special days in the entire Islamic calendar. When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on this day. He asked why — and they said it was the day Allah saved Prophet Musa ﷺ and his people from Pharaoh.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "We have more right to Musa than you." And he fasted — and commanded the Muslims to fast. He also said to fast the 9th as well — to distinguish from the Jews.

One day of fasting — and an entire year of sins forgiven. This is the mercy of Allah. This is the gift of Ashura.

Mark your calendar for the 9th and 10th of Muharram. Fast both days. And begin your new year with a clean slate. 🤍

Imagine millions of people — from every country, every language, every background — all standing on one plain. No rich, no poor. No black, no white. No king, no beggar.
